The solo exhibition, “Motion and Light,” is an exploration of the ways in which Piccoli employs the use of color, light, and form to create inherently kinetic art that encompasses the transcendental beauty of the Mediterranean coast. Piccoli uses views of his native country, whether they are landscapes or seascapes, as the theater for his visual dramatizations of “Mediterranean light” and color. The kinetic quality of his work refers to his dramatic treatment of the surface layers – the fractured light and color causes the water to glisten, the boats to sway, the sails to tremble. These rhythmic compositions become thematic representations of natural beauty, man in nature, and internal illumination.
Pietro Piccoli was born in Montopoli di Sabina, Italy, a small town outside of Rome. He honed his artistic skills, and by age 20, he pursued a formal artistic career in Rome, an epicenter of creative energy in the 1970s. After exposure to various art, artists, and travels, Piccoli transitioned into an experimental phase in his art, exploring the geometric abstractions of landscape, seascapes, and still life compositions. Influences of impressionism, expressionism, and fauvism aided him in the definition of his artistic vision. Today, his artwork focuses on bright colors, theatrical lighting, and geometric forms in order to represent views of Mediterranean culture.
