Reading between the Lines ventures to create a dialogue with the Atlanta public about the relationship between art and language by focusing on conceptualism. Unlike more formalistic styles of art, in conceptual works the subject or message is often a mystery. Thus, the work only becomes activated when the viewer gives it meaning through language. “There is a fundamental visual component to learning to read,” states gallery director Rhonda DiMatteo, “in the same way that language is an integral part of understanding art.” The show will focus on the conceptual component of a number of works in the gallery by artists such as Victor Bregeda, Brad Robertson, Frane Mlinar, Gail Foster, and Pat Hobaugh. The show will also feature works by students of The Schenck School who have reinterpreted historical paintings including Vincent Van Gogh’s Bedroom at Arles (1888), and Edvard Munch’s The Scream(1893).
The gallery has partnered with the non-profit, REAP and the The Schenck School in order to bring awareness to dyslexia and the need for specialized teacher training for all public school teachers. A portion of all sales from the show will benefit both organizations. To learn more about REAP, please visit www.strugglingreaders.org or The Schenck School at www.schenck.org.
